Tampa BayWatch – My Thoughts on the Bucs

Week 5 Preview – Tampa Bay at Indianapolis

with one comment

The Bucs are facing their most difficult game of the season when they travel to Indianapolis to face Peyton Manning and the Colts. The Colts have started this season like they finished last season, are 4-0 and looking impressive. The Bucs must be one of the surprise packages of this season but will have their hands full on Sunday. Last week the Broncos racked up nearly 200 yards on the ground but still lost 38-20 to the Colts. Can the Bucs defence stop Manning and his offence or are the Bucs the latest team to be steam rollered at the RCA dome ?

Will the Bucs go the same way as the Saints ??

For the Bucs it’s been a bad week, the main news that Cadillac Williams and Luke Petitgout have been placed on IR. Greg Spires seems to be getting over his injury and participated fully in practice on Thursday. However Phillip Buchanon, Ike Hilliard and Brian Kelly were limited in practice.

The injury news isn’t that great for the Colts either with linebacker Rob Morris having been placed on IR. 1o Colts players missed practice on Wednesday but their key concerns are over WR Marvin Harrison who is struggling with a knee injury, Joseph Addai (chest), Dallas Clark (leg), Marlin Jackson (Quadricep), Freddy Keiaho (Concussion), Bob Sanders (Chest) and Ben Utecht (Concussion).

Keys to the Game:

Bucs Linebackers v Colts Slot Recievers : The colts use the slot receiver more than any other team and the Bucs will need to ensure that whoever lines up their is covered. A few seasons ago Brandon Stokely was the man in the slot, but now it can be anyone on that Colts offence. Most recently its been Dallas Clark the TE, but Anthony Gonzalez the rookie from Ohio St is starting to fit into the offence and if Clark is limited he will see a lot of time. The Bucs need to ensure that they cover the seams and the slot routes and if in zone coverage the handoff of coverage responsibilities must be watched otherwise Manning will find the open man.

Peyton Manning v Bucs D Line : Given time Manning can pick apart the best of defences and the Bucs will need to get to the QB. The Colts line is led by in my opinion the best C in the game in Jeff Saturday, and although not household names the rest of the line give Manning the time he needs. One chink in this line could be the rookie LT Tony Ugoh. The Bucs front 4 haven’t generated enough of a pass rush in the first 4 games and they will need to try and get to Manning.

Backup RB’s : So how many people know who Kenton Keith is ? Last week he stepped in well for the Colts when Addai suffered a chest injury. If Addai isn’t fit the load will fall onto Keith and he’ll need to step up. Likewise for the Bucs, Pittman and Graham will need to step up to provide some punch in the running game.

Prediction :

I still can’t decide how good this Bucs team is and the trip to the Colts is the perfect test. If both sides were fully fit I feel that the Colts could run away with it. However both teams are missing key stars and this makes it harder to predict. I still feel the Colts have too much for the Bucs and should be comfortable winners

Colts by 14.

NFL Predictions :

CLE @ NE :- Despite the revival in Cleveland the Patriots are just too strong at the moment – Patriots

ARI @ STL :- Kurt Leinart and the Cards should have too much for the out of sorts Rams – Cardinals
TB @ IND :- The Bucs have come a long way this season but this is one step too far – Colts
SD @ DEN :- Turner must be looking over his shoulder for the axe. The team will respond – Chargers
BAL @ SF :- A horror performance last week by the 9ers and can Dilfer turn his old team over ? – Ravens
