Tampa BayWatch – My Thoughts on the Bucs

Simms Placed on IR

Chris Simms has been placed on IR to free up roster space to allow the Bucs to sign another RB to ease the current crisis. Simms still hasn’t recovered from the splenectomy that he had last season and has been listed as the #4 QB on the depth chart. Bruce Allen informed Simms of the the decision on Tuesday and he will be placed on IR today.

“This is what we feel is the best move for Chris to regain his full strength,” Allen said. “We’ve been very hopeful, as has Chris . . . that he would’ve recovered by now. It’s just taking longer than both Chris and we had hoped for. We’ll make another roster move to add a player on Wednesday.”ESPN.com

Whilst I can understand the timing of the decision with the crisis that we have at RB, I can’t understand why Simms wasn’t placed on IR at the start of the season and freed up the roster spot earlier. We had 3 fit QB’s in camp and Simms was never likely to see the field. Longer term questions still hang over the future of Chris Simms in Tampa but he won’t see the field this season.
