Tampa BayWatch – My Thoughts on the Bucs

Week 7 Preview – Tampa Bay at Detroit

Fresh off another win the Bucs head north to face the Detroit Lions. The Lions are 3-2 and will be looking to keep themselves in the race for the NFC North. The Bucs have bolstered their running game this week with the signing of Michael Bennett and will need to be able to control the clock against a highly potent Detroit offence led by Jon Kitna. Detroit have one of the best WR’s cores in the league led by Roy Williams and rookie Calvin Johnson, they also possess underrated WR’s in Mike Furrey and Shaun McDonald. If Kitna can start to find his receivers then it could be a long day for the Bucs secondary.

Injuries:

Bucs:

The Bucs have 3 players that are trying to overcome injuries for this weeks trip to Detroit. Patrick Chukwurah (Shoulder), Alex Smith (Ankle) and Brian Kelly (Groin). It’s doubtful if any of the three will make the field, Kellys groin injury has kept him out of 5 of the 6 Bucs games and it will be a surprise to see him play. It’s great to see that Smith even has a chance after he left the field against the Titans on a cart.

Defensive end Greg Spires was limited during practice on Wednesday due to an ankle injury, but I expect him to start.

Lions:

The Lions seem quite healthy overall with only one player listed on the injury report, Stanley Wilson who has a groin injury. Sean McHugh and Keith Smith were limited in practice but expected to start.

Keys to the Game

Bucs Secondary v Lions WR’s: If Kitna can find his WR’s early and get some rhythm then the Bucs secondary could struggle. In Johnson and Williams the Lions have two physically talented WR’s and they will provide a tough matchup for Barber and Buchanon.

Run Games: The Bucs cannot continue to be so one dimensional on offence. Last week Graham rushed for 23 yards and it was left to Jeff Garcia and the WR’s to eek out a win against the Titans. Hopefully Michael Bennett will suit up and provide a nice 1-2 punch in the backfield with Earnest Graham.

Kevin Jones is reportedly set to start for the Lions after he has overcome a foot injury sustained last season that has kept him out of 2 games this season. Jones is a definite upgrade in the Lions backfield and the Bucs will need to sustain their defensive levels of play to keep Jones quiet

Bucs Pass Rush: The Lions have struggled in recent games in protecting Kitna and the Bucs must exploit this. The Bucs pass rush has been inconsistent over the first few games and the Bucs must pressure Kitna to stop him finding his WR’s.

Prediction

On paper it seems another eminently winnable game for the Bucs but they may need to score more than 13 points to win against the Lions

Bucs win by 10
