Tampa BayWatch – My Thoughts on the Bucs

Week 8 Preview – Jacksonville at Tampa Bay

The Bucs head back to the RayJay after a tough loss on the road to the Detroit Lions. Despite the fumbles that cost them the game the Bucs will be buoyed by the offensive performance led by Jeff Garcia and Earnest Graham. The Jags are 4-2 and had started to get on a roll until they came up against the Superbowl Champion Colts. However the loss was made worse when it was revealed that starting QB David Garrard will miss 3-4 weeks with a high ankle sprain.

Garrard to miss game ?

Injuries:

For the Bucs, Michael Clayton, Alex Smith and Michael Pittman were held out of practice. Patrick Chukwurah and cornerback Brian Kelly were involved in a limited fashion.

For the Jaguars as well as David Garrard, Maurice Jones-Drew who picked up a knee injury against the Colts and didn’t practice. Five other player had a limited workout Reggie Hayward, Tony McDaniel, Marcus Stroud, Daryl Smith and George Wrighster. Hayward, Stroud and Smith are all starters.

Keys to the Game:

Bucs O-Line v Jags DT’s: The Jaguars have one of the best 1-2 DT tandems in the league in John Henderson and Marcus Stroud. The Bucs line struggled last week against the Lions and they will need to improve to keep Garcia on his feet. Stroud and Henderson are big athletic DT’s and unless the middle of the Tampa line can nullify them Graham and Bennett could find their running lanes limited.

Run Games: With Quinn Gray likely to start at QB, the Jags will be leaning heavily on Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew and it will be up to the Bucs front 4 and linebackers to stop them. The Jags rotate the two backs frequently and they provide one of the best 1-2 punches in the league. If the Jags linemen can get off their blocks and into the second level then Ruud, Brooks and June will have a tough job in slowing down this pair. Like last week the Bucs will need Graham and Bennett to get some success on the ground but it looks a tough ask.

Prediction:

This won’t be a high scoring game and I feel the Bucs will be able to control the Jaguars one dimensional offence

Bucs by 3

NFL Prediction:

IND @ CAR – Even with Vinny at QB it won’t be enough
DET @ CHI – Are the Bears starting to get it together ?
PIT @ CIN – The Steelers ball control offence should carry the day.
NYG @ MIA – No QB, now no RB. Eli to win at Wembley
PHI @ MIN – AP to carry on his ROTY performance
CLE @ STL – Browns confidence is high and should doom the Rams to 0-8
OAK @ TEN – I’ve picked the Titans – no idea why
BUF @ NYJ – Can the Bills build on the win against the Ravens ?
HOU @ SD – Will this game go ahead ? SD if it does
JAC @ TB – Tampa
WAS @ NE – The Moss and Brady show rolls on
NO @ SF – 9ers line is a mess won’t be able to keep pace with Saints offence
GB @ DEN – The teams match up well but the Favre has too many offensive weapons
