The Bucs 2007: QB, RB, WR – Room for improvement or excellent considering ?

leave a comment »

The season has closed for the 2007 Bucs and it’s time to take stock of where we are and what should be done to build on what has been an interesting season. The Bucs finished the season with a trip to the playoffs and another NFC South Division title.

At the start of 2007 i’d have said that either was unlikely, but the divisional teams were poor this season and the Bucs took advantage of some teams on poor runs (early season wins against the Saints and Rams comes to mind). So where do the Bucs need to improve to ensure that we don’t follow the trend in the division and end up as the team at the bottom of the NFC South ? Firstly i’ll look at the offensive side of the ball.

How much of a role will Graham have next season ?

Bucs Bye Week Review

leave a comment »

After a fast start the Bucs have stumbled to the half way point of the season with a record of 5-4. The Bucs could easily be 7-2 but lost winnable games against the Lions and Jaguars. The season has progressed under a cloud of injuries to key starters but there has been a number of bright spots through the first half of the season. Jeff Garcia has been a revelation at QB and has provided key leadership under centre. Should i be happy with 5-4 or feel that the team have let slip 2 winnable games ?

Bucs 1st Quarter Review

So four weeks are already in the books and its been a surprising few weeks for the teams in the NFC South. The Saints have gone 0-3 and must be glad of the early bye week, the Bucs are 3-1 and I’m happy with the progress of the team, however the injuries to Cadillac Williams and Luke Petitgout have cast a real shadow over this week. The Falcons are 1-3 and could quite easily be 2-2 , the Panthers are 2-2 and have a lot of questions hanging over the team. Here’s my take on the first 4 weeks for the Bucs and what the next 4 weeks has instore.

Mike Alstott placed on IR

with one comment

On Thursday at an emotional press conference the Buccaneers and Mike Alstott announced that he would be placed on Injured Reserve for the 07 season.

Alstott had noticed that the usual training camp soreness was not receding from his neck. An examination by the surgeon that worked on Alstott’s first neck injury in 2003 has shown unacceptable levels of stress in the neck above the area that was damaged and subsequently fused. The surgeons have decided that the best approach is to keep Alstott off the field, as they can’t be sure what would happen if further stress was to occur in the neck.

“There are always situations where it could be worsened by playing,” said Alstott. “That’s why we have IR and that’s why you don’t play for the rest of the year. It is a severe injury and it’s a situation you don’t mess with. That’s why we’re in front of you right now.” – Mike Alstott

Last season, a rapid descent to 4-12

Having a top 4 draft pick was not what most Buc fans were expecting at the start of last year. The team was expected to grow, Simms had started to perform at QB, Cadillac was expected to repeat his Rookie of the Year performance, and the feeling was the Michael Clayton would get back to his rookie form. Pundits had the team making a charge for the playoffs again, however the season very rapidly nosedived.

The team got off to a lousy start under Simms, and the pressure was on. The team were 0-2 and Simms was looking decidedly uncomfortable under centre, by the time he was replaced in the Carolina game by Gradkowski (a rookie out of Toledo) he had thrown 1 TD and 7 INT’s. An explosive fightback (in more ways than one, Simms would be at the ER less than 15 minutes after the game with a ruptured spleen) against the Panthers showed the team improving, but with the loss of Simms the season looked to be done.
